Chaenomeles!

Straight from a cold spring to what feels like a the middle of summer.

Due to the cold winter and spring the plants in our gardens are around 3 - 4 weeks later this year than usual in terms of flowering time and coming into leaf.

One of the stars of the show at the moment in the gardens is Chaenomeles speciosa 'Toyo-Nishiki' (top photo), a flowering quince covered with very beautiful pale pink and white flowers on the same plant.

Another cultivar nearby, Chaenomeles speciosa 'Umbilicata' (bottom photo), is also very eye-catching with fantastic rose pink flowers in abundance along the branches.

Both these plants are medium to large sized shrubs which are at their best in spring (albeit usually in April rather than late May) and give a great display of early colour in the garden.
